Bat Speed Drills

This is a series of swing training hitting drills that brings together the researched principles of bat speed training with measurement and feedback to accelerate the learning process.  Each of these drills provide considerable knowledge of results (KR) which, when combined with overload-underload implement training, can lead to improvements in bat speed and swing quickness that are beyond 8-10% increases that have been shown in researchCheck the results page for bat speed improvements of 10-20 mph and total swing mechanics transformations.

Batted Ball Exit Velocity Drill (3:42)

This is a foundational bat speed development drill because the hitter can focus almost exclusively on creating swing speed.  The primary focus is hitting the ball as hard as possible off of the tee, but there is still the feedback of making solid contact, the direction of the ball, and the actual speed of the batted ball.  These different types of feedback help the player monitor the quality of the swing (good mechanics) while maintaining the necessary intensity level that is necessary for increasing bat swing velocity.

Ball Exit Velocity + Quickness (3:50)

Adding the quickness measurement is a great way to guard against developing a long swing.  One common mistake in bat speed training is allowing the player to lengthen the swing in order to swing faster, but this is counter-productive.  High level hitters unload their swings in a specific amount of time, and we can measure it.  We can challenge the player to hit the ball at his maximal speed (determined in the first drill above), while making sure the swing is executed in the necessary time frame.  This is a great drill to create swing efficiency – the combination of swing quickness AND bat speed.

Anticipation Stress Timing (4:35)

Anticipation or stress training forces the player to shift focus to an external stimulus (ie the pitcher).  This exercise adds a timing and rhythm component as the player has to initiate the swing based on a sequence that simulates the wind-up of a pitcher.

Anticipation Stress Timing + Quickness (5:17)

The anticipation + quickness bat speed drill transforms the tee into a game-like training station.  It combines everything into one drill and provides a training environment that most closely replicates the demands of hitting in a game.  This drill forces the player to start the swing from an external stimulus, hit the ball as hard as possible in the right direction with a short stroke.
